Salmonella Outbreaks Linked to Backyard Poultry
Backyard poultry, including chickens and ducks, can carry Salmonella germs that can make people sick. These germs can spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live and roam. The main risk comes from touching the birds, their eggs, or their environment and then touching your mouth or food. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and young children are particularly at risk. Recommendations include washing hands thoroughly after handling poultry, keeping poultry away from living areas, supervising children, and properly cooking eggs.
